What Is Restorative Yoga?
Restorative Yoga is a core expression of the Life Balancing Therapies philosophy—a holistic approach that supports the body, breath, mind, and nervous system working together for long-term health and well-being.
This practice is offered live on Zoom, allowing you to practice in the privacy and comfort of your own home, using your own props (pillows, blankets, chairs, bolsters, or blocks). Practicing at home often allows for deeper relaxation, as your body can fully settle into a familiar and safe environment.
1. Conscious relaxation: restoring balance to the nervous system
Within Life Balancing Therapies, true health begins when the nervous system can shift out of constant “doing” and into being. Restorative yoga uses long-held, fully supported resting poses to cultivate the skill of conscious relaxation.
Rather than effort or achievement, the practice asks:
How can I do less? How can I allow my body and breath to support healing and balance?
This gentle approach helps unwind habitual tension and supports sustainable energy, clarity, and resilience.
2. Awareness of tension: creating space for change
A key principle of Life Balancing Therapies is awareness before action. In restorative yoga, the body is supported by the ground and props so muscular effort can fully release. This creates the opportunity to notice where tension is held—physically, emotionally, or mentally—and to soften it through breath and attention.
As tension releases, space is created for greater ease, comfort, and adaptability, supporting the whole person rather than just isolated symptoms.
3. Supporting the body’s natural healing rhythms
Restorative yoga intentionally creates the conditions for the relaxation response—the physiological state in which healing, repair, digestion, immunity, and restoration can occur. This aligns directly with Life Balancing Therapies’ emphasis on working with the body’s natural rhythms rather than pushing against them.
Through stillness, grounding, and unforced breathing, the body is reminded that it is safe, allowing energy to shift from survival mode into long-term health and vitality.
Restorative yoga is appropriate for all ages and abilities and is especially supportive during times of stress, recovery, transition, chronic tension, or fatigue. Practicing on Zoom from home allows the work to integrate seamlessly into daily life—meeting you exactly where you are.
